Heritage and History

The story behind our venue - From Dovecourts historic roller skating rink to todays community hub.

The Dovercourt Roller Skating Rink first opened its doors in 1947, becoming one of the town’s most popular seaside attractions. Its grand opening featured a display by professional skaters Harry Taylor and Barbara Hanson, and from that moment, it became a much-loved venue for families, visitors, and locals alike.

For decades, the rink echoed with laughter, music, and the rhythm of wheels on the floor — a place where friendships formed and memories were made. It played a key role in Dovercourt’s social and cultural life, offering a space for fun and connection right by the sea.

After a major refurbishment and official re-opening in 1973, the rink continued to serve the community for many years before eventually falling into disrepair.

In 2021, The Lighthouse Sports and Social Hub took on the building with a vision to restore its community spirit and give it a new purpose. Through months of hard work, the once-neglected rink was renovated and transformed into a welcoming space for all ages to enjoy.

Then, in 2024, FacesUK CIC formally took over the lease, ensuring the site would continue to serve the community as a not-for-profit, inclusive hub for health, fitness, and social connection.

What makes The Lighthouse truly special is the connection it holds across generations. We often hear from grandparents who fondly remember skating here in their youth, and now, they bring their children and grandchildren to enjoy activities in the very same space. It’s a wonderful reminder of how deeply rooted this building is in our local community’s story.
